How will the Naval Reserve respond to the challenges created by the cuts in the Defense Department's budget? What kinds of things is the Naval Reserve doing now that are not well understood or appreciated? In what ways can the Naval Reserve do more to contribute to the Navy's mission?

To help commemorate the Naval Reserve's 75th Anniversary and stimulate thinking to answer these and other questions facing the Naval Reserve, the U. S. Naval Institute is sponsoring an essay contest.

The Naval Institute will award cash prizes of $1,000, $750, and $500 to the authors of the top three essays. If you don't have 3,500 words, write a 1,000–2,000 word opinion piece or professional note.
