‘Leadership and learning are indispendable to each other.’
John F. Kennedy (1917–1963)
Crew members of the USS Brooklyn (Armored Cruiser No. 3) are depicted in this c. 1896 photograph taken before her seminal role as flagship of the “Flying Squadron” under command of Commodore Winfield Scott Schley in the Spanish-American War two years later. During the Battle of Santiago, she was struck by 20 shells, yet suffered only one man killed.
